Lost Fighter Planes

Friday, 13th April @10pm

On a day that changed the course of the Second World War, fighter pilot Sergeant Ray Holmes - in a dogfight over London - spotted a German bomber making its approach to Buckingham Palace, home of King George VI. Realising the danger, and having run out of ammunition, Holmes made the extraordinarily brave decision to ram the German bomber with his own plane. Both planes crashed. The German pilot died of his injuries but Ray Holmes baled out safely as his damaged Hurricane came down in Buckingham Palace Road. The programme features an exclusive interview with Sergeant Holmes now 89 years old. It also follows the story of aviation enthusiast Christopher Bennett, who has been investigating the story for the past twelve years and has located the exact position of the remains through historical research, photography and ground-penetrating radar. The film follows Bennett's dig at a busy London crossroads for Holmes's Hurricane fighter and unites the pilot with his plane."
